Description
This beautiful rug depicts the famous Azerbaijani folklore song 'Apardi Sellar Sarani' centred around a girl names Sara and the Arpa river. Sarah spent her childhood playing by the banks of the Arpa river. Over the years the river became very dependant on Sara. Arpa would flow excitedly when Sara was there and be lifelessly still when she was away. One day a man gives Sara a desiring gaze whilst she is sat by the river bank. Arpa feels great jealousy towards his gazing and floods, taking Sara with it...there are several variants of the story but they all essentially end with Sara being taken or drowned by the river. The rugs fine weave creates a detailed drawing-like design that's full of movement and expression. The serenity of the moment is highlighted by its soft colour palette.
